Empowering Survivors: Renewed Voices' Commitment to Healing and Hope

At Renewed Voices, we are dedicated to supporting survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) through comprehensive health services, counseling, and economic empowerment programs. We believe that healing begins with restoring dignity and providing pathways to independence—and nowhere is this mission more crucial than in Kenya, where GBV remains alarmingly prevalent. In 2024, Kenya recorded an unprecedented 79% increase in femicide, with nearly 200 women murdered—making it the deadliest year on record. These cases were often perpetrated by intimate partners, showing how home can tragically become the most dangerous place for women. Overall, about 38% of women in Kenya report experiencing gender-based violence, far surpassing the global average of 27%. The GBV helpline (1195) has also seen a dramatic rise in usage. By 2023, nearly 8,900 survivors accessed essential services through it, up from just over 1,100 in 2019. Case resolutions have improved significantly too, with success rates jumping from 58% in 2021 to 98% in 2022. Still, the health and economic toll of GBV remains staggering, with survivors and their families bearing annual costs estimated at KES 46 billion due to healthcare expenses and lost productivity. In this grim landscape, Renewed Voices steps in to offer vital support through three key avenues. First, our health services provide survivors with timely medical care, mental health counseling, STI prevention, and safe referrals to ensure compassionate treatment in moments of crisis. Second, our counseling and referral support bridges survivors with tele-counseling, confidential support systems, and emergency medical and legal aid whenever needed. Third, our economic empowerment programs equip survivors with vocational skills, self-defense training, and income-generating opportunities—helping them regain autonomy and rebuild financially. Across the country, progress is also visible. FGM prevalence, for instance, has declined from 32% in 2003 to 15% in 2022 thanks to tireless advocacy and cultural leadership shifts. Community elders in regions like Samburu and Bungoma have publicly committed to abandoning harmful practices, while judicial reforms are delivering faster GBV case resolutions and expanding specialized services. Renewed Voices is committed to being part of this transformation. Through our holistic model—healthcare, counseling, and empowerment—we honor survivors’ courage, uplift their spirits, and provide them with the tools to chart a new path forward. Join our mission today. Your support helps us expand these vital services, influence systemic change, and elevate the voices of survivors across Kenya.
